Son of the Maya is a international adventure set in Washington, Miami and the jungles of Guatemala between 2006 and 2009. The drama involves an international kidnapping and daring rescue that pits a wealthy U.S. immigrant foundation executive against a dynamic Guatemalan revolutionary. Roberto Prettyman was born in Guatemala City, but raised in Washington during the 1960s. He built an enormously successful suburban real estate practice before turning to philanthropy. A brilliant university political student, Felix Gigante (The Jaguar Paw) was radicalized and then built a powerful revolutionary force after his father was murdered by Guatemalan authorities. Tension between these native Guatemalans with divergent approaches to social change, yet similar perspectives on injustice reaches explosive crescendo after unpredicted twists and turns.

Son of the MayaRoberto Prettyman is as engaging, prone to impulse, and fun to root for as Paying to Play in Hong Kong’s hero Harry Morton, and the intriguing women and difficult men, vivid scenery and international intrigue he encounters are every bit as entertaining.
Son of the Maya is the kind of novel that you’ll keep nearby from first page to last. The action is rewarding, the banter always interesting, and the human connections between characters bridging cultural and generational differences always informed by a savvy observer’s keen ear.
As you might expect, by the time you finish Son of the Maya, you’ll have also acquired some new insights into the architecture of Guatemala City, ethnic confluence of Washington, DC’s changing neighborhoods, subjectivity on social justice through prisms of life experience and relative privilege or poverty. You’ll probably come away feeling a bit smarter for the quality time just spent following the familiar, rich storytelling of a favorite writer.

Son of the Maya John H McKoy 9781524607289 Books Reviews
Nicely done thriller with good local color.
A lively, well-written tale incorporating contemporary front-burner social and political issues. Great for summer reading.
Garbage.
A solid thriller that touches on deeper issues. Well-developed characters and a plot that keeps you reading. A mix a geographies and cultures forms the basis for a pleasant reading experience, but one that makes the reader reflect on how we approach the world and its problems.
Within a tautly-told international thriller, McKoy presents a compelling debate between divergent approaches to social and economic justice. Is change better achieved by investment in incremental measures? Or is the only effective method through revolution? You find yourself kidnapped and held captive in a vividly described, hostile struggle that is equally physical and intellectual. You emerge exhausted from the Guatemalan jungles enlightened yet unsure whether any efforts will have sustained impact.
